Chevron Amethyst Point

A Chevron Amethyst point from Brazil. The chevron banding of this specimen shows several parallel V-shaped layers, a 'striped' variety with numerous growth cycles.

The number of visible V-bands documents the number of solution changes during growth. Pieces with few bands (2-3) formed during shorter growth phases, while pieces with many bands (5-10) document longer mineralization histories with cyclically changing chemistry.

The multi-layered variety is particularly interesting gemmologically, as it makes the geological growth history readable as a compact stratigraphy. Collectors who prioritize mineralogical-paleontological aspects especially value such multi-band pieces.
