Chevron Amethyst Point

Chevron amethyst (also called dog-tooth amethyst) forms in deposits with cyclically changing solution chemistry. Phases with high iron concentration crystallize as purple amethyst, while phases with low iron substitution yield white rock crystal. The alternating layers form characteristic V-patterns because quartz crystallography is hexagonal, and the growth fronts converge towards the tip.

The Brazilian chevron amethyst deposits are located in the Serra Geral Basalt Formation. The material quality is gemologically classified by the sharpness of the V-lines; in premium pieces, the banding lines are sharply defined with clear color transitions.
