Chevron Amethyst Point

A chevron amethyst point from Brazil. The banding stratigraphy of this piece shows a particularly sharp transition between the purple amethyst and white rock crystal layers.

The sharpness of the transitions is an important gemological characteristic: sharp layer boundaries document rapid changes in solution chemistry, while soft transitions indicate slow, gradual changes. Both variants are authentic but are classified differently gemologically; sharp transitions are considered 'high-definition' chevron.

The Brazilian deposits in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina supply chevron amethyst in both quality variants. The deposit history of the specific sediment layer determines which variant predominates.
