Chevron Amethyst Point

A chevron amethyst point from Brazil. The chevron stratification of this point shows particularly symmetrical V-arrangements, a premium characteristic due to its origin.

The symmetry of the chevron lines is a function of the original geode geometry and growth conditions. In symmetrical cavities with an even distribution of solution, the typical sharp V-lines are formed. Asymmetrical geodes produce more irregular banding patterns.

Brazilian chevron amethysts are mined in the region between Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The deposits in this region also produce classic amethyst and agate; the variation in solution chemistry produces the different types of material.

The point shape is a curatorial cut classification. The polished exterior shows the banding from every angle.
