Beautiful Opalescent Heart - Ammolite Heart

An Ammolite heart from Alberta, Canada, with distinct iridescence and a uniformly patterned shell surface.

Ammolite consists of the iridescent aragonite shell of prehistoric ammonites. Approximately 65 million years ago, in the Bearpaw Shale of the Late Cretaceous, the shell was transformed into its current opalescent form under pressure and mineralization.

The heart shape is a selection made during the cutting process from a larger shell fragment. A continuously iridescent heart silhouette requires careful pre-selection of the raw material.

Sealed with a resin layer to stabilize the thin aragonite layer.
