Iron meteorite from Argentina, Campo del Cielo

An iron meteorite from the famous Campo del Cielo strewn field in northern Argentina, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years old at the impact site.

The compact, almost sculptural form shows pronounced regmaglypts, crater-like indentations formed by friction with the air upon atmospheric entry. The reddish-brown accents on the exposed surfaces are due to incipient, controlled oxidation of the iron content.

Campo del Cielo is one of the three most significant meteorite fields in the world. The fragments consist predominantly of iron with a nickel content between six and seven percent. This composition only occurs within differentiated asteroids.

When etched, cross-sections of such meteorites show Widmanstätten patterns, a lattice-like crystallization structure. It forms only under the pressure and cooling conditions of an asteroid core over millions of years.

The material is approximately 4.5 billion years old, older than the entire solar system in its current form.
