Iron meteorite from Argentina, Campo del Cielo

An iron meteorite from the famous Campo del Cielo strewn field in northern Argentina, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years old at the impact site.

The piece shows the regmaglypts characteristic of iron meteorites. These crater-like indentations are formed by friction with the air during atmospheric entry.

Campo del Cielo is one of the three most important meteorite fields in the world. The fragments consist predominantly of iron with a nickel content of between six and seven percent. This composition only occurs inside differentiated asteroids.

When etched, cross-sections of such meteorites show the Widmanstätten figures. This lattice-like crystallization pattern only forms over millions of years under the pressure and cooling conditions of an asteroid core. It cannot be reproduced on Earth.

The material is approximately 4.5 billion years old, older than the entire solar system in its current form. It is one of the oldest materials you can hold in your hand.
