Iron meteorites consist of an iron-nickel alloy, typically 90 percent iron with 5 to 15 percent nickel and traces of cobalt, phosphorus, and sulfur. They originate from the core of shattered asteroids and are the oldest solid materials in the solar system, with an age of around 4.5 billion years.

The Campo del Cielo strewn field in Argentina documents one of the largest meteorite impacts in recent Earth history, approximately 4000 years ago. The deposit is classified as a premium provenance in the collector market.
