Iron meteorite from Argentina, Campo del Cielo

An iron meteorite from the famous Campo del Cielo strewn field in northern Argentina, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years old at the impact site.

An elongated, slightly flattened shape with pronounced regmaglypts. These crater-like indentations are formed during atmospheric entry by friction with the air.

Campo del Cielo is one of the three most important meteorite fields in the world. The fragments consist predominantly of iron with a nickel content of between six and seven percent. This composition only occurs within differentiated asteroids.

When etched, cross-sections of such meteorites show Widmanstätten patterns. This lattice-like crystallization pattern only forms under the pressure and cooling conditions of an asteroid core over millions of years.

The material is approximately 4.5 billion years old, older than the entire solar system in its current form.
