Iron meteorite from Argentina, Campo del Cielo

An iron meteorite from the famous Campo del Cielo strewn field in northern Argentina, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years old at the impact site.

This piece shows an elongated shape with pronounced regmaglypts, crater-like indentations that form during atmospheric entry due to friction with the air.

Campo del Cielo is one of the three most important meteorite fields in the world. The fragments consist predominantly of iron with a nickel content between six and seven percent. A composition that only occurs inside differentiated asteroids.

Etched cross-sections of such meteorites show Widmanstätten figures, a lattice-like crystallization pattern. It only forms over millions of years under the pressure and cooling conditions of an asteroid core.

The material is approximately 4.5 billion years old, older than the entire solar system in its current form.
