Iron meteorites of the IAB group (to which Campo del Cielo belongs) typically consist of 90% iron, 6-8% nickel and traces of cobalt, phosphorus and sulfur. This chemical signature unmistakably distinguishes meteoritic iron from terrestrial iron.

The Campo del Cielo strewn field extends over approximately 60 km in the Argentine Chaco; the documented impact approximately 4000 years ago is one of the few meteorite impacts that have been preserved in the oral tradition of indigenous peoples. The first documented European collections began in 1576 with Spanish expeditions.
