Iron Meteorite from Campo del Cielo, Argentina – Pendant in 925 Sterling Silver

A Campo del Cielo, Argentina, iron meteorite pendant, set in 925 sterling silver. The fragment shows the typical dark grey meteorite patina with occasional rust-orange oxidation traces along crack lines.

The oxidation traces document its time on Earth since the impact approximately 4000 years ago. Iron meteorites weather more slowly than terrestrial iron because they have less oxygen stored in their crystal structure, but they have still developed a natural patina.

The Campo del Cielo crater complex extends over the Argentinian provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero. The largest individual fragments weigh several tons; small splinters, like the material for this pendant, were distributed across the entire strewn field.
