Dreamy red-green opalescent Ammonite, Ammolite from Canada, Alberta

An opalescent ammonite from Alberta, Canada, with dominant red and green iridescence. Gemologically classified as ammolite.

The color distribution is known as a dragon-skin pattern. A particularly prized variant in the international ammolite market.

Ammolite comes from the aragonite shell of Late Cretaceous ammonites of the genus Placenticeras. In the sediments of the Bearpaw Formation, approximately 75 million years old, the original aragonite lamellar structure was transformed under pressure into the shimmering layer seen today.

Red-green ammolites are considered the classic premium variant. The red fields usually show the thinnest aragonite lamellae, the green ones the medium, and the blue ones the thicker. A visible stratigraphy of light refraction, determined by color physics.

The deposit on the Saint-Mary River is under strict supervision of the Blackfeet indigenous people and Canadian authorities. Mining is restricted to a few certified operators.
