An iridescent, colourful Ammolite ammonite from Canada, Alberta. The iridescent shell displays the full colour spectrum of the rare Ammolite variety.
Ammolite is the opalescent form of ammonite shells from the Bearpaw Formation. Cretaceous ammonites from this region lived around 70 million years ago. Their aragonite shell was transformed into an iridescent layer by geological conditions.
The opalescent colours are created by light diffraction on microscopic layer structures. Ammolite is recognised as an official gemstone and belongs to the gemmological premium league of the palaeontological market.
The Bearpaw deposits are the world's only commercial source of Ammolite. Noteworthy is the colour change from rich red to emerald green when the viewing angle changes.
A Canadian collector's item of architectural gallery dimension with documented Bearpaw Cretaceous provenance.
Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth. Protect from hard impacts and sunlight.
