beautiful opalescent colorful ammonite, called Ammolite, from Canada

A fully prepared Ammolite from Alberta, Canada, preserved on both sides and grown to 42 cm in diameter.

The iridescence of the shell changes between intense green and blue, amber-yellow, and rare ruby-red and purple-violet reflections. This range of colors is what makes Canadian Ammolites the most sought-after form of fossil shell remains worldwide.

Ammolite consists of the iridescent aragonite shell of prehistoric ammonites. In the Upper Cretaceous Bearpaw Shale, the shell was transformed into its present opalescent form approximately 65 million years ago through pressure and mineralization.

Only a narrow geographical strip along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains yields this quality, primarily in the St. Mary River basin.

The color development of the individual fields is not random: red-orange occurs in thinner layers, green-blue in thicker ones. On such a piece, the layer thickness variation of the original shell can be read, information that would be lost in polished Ammolite cabochons.

A solitaire that stands out in a collection, a reception area, or a private library. Double-sided preservation allows for two different presentations.
