Dreamlike blue-green opalescent ammonite, Ammolite from Canada, Alberta

An iridescent ammonite from Alberta, Canada, with dominant blue and green shimmering tones, gemmologically classified as ammolite. The aragonite shell shimmers like a gemstone with fine wave-iris effects.

Ammolite is, alongside pearl and amber, the third biogenic gemstone variety in mineralogy. It originates from the aragonite shell of Upper Cretaceous ammonites of the genus Placenticeras. These were deposited approximately 75 million years ago in the sediments of the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta.

The blue and green color fields of this piece indicate particularly well-preserved aragonite lamellae that refract light in the corresponding wavelengths. Blue-green ammolite varieties are in the premium class and particularly prized gemmologically.

The deposit on the Saint Mary River is under strict control of the Blackfeet indigenous people, whose land covers large parts of the occurrence. Mining is limited to a few certified operators, which characterizes the finite nature of the material.
