A large aquamarine crystal from Brazil, embedded in a matrix of clear quartz. An unusual preservation constellation. Typically, aquamarines grow freely in pegmatitic cavities; here, the crystal is completely enclosed by quartz.

Beryl and quartz often crystallize in parallel in pegmatitic cavities, but usually in spatially separated phases. The fact that the aquamarine is completely embedded in the quartz here indicates a special sequence. Aquamarine crystallized first, then a later silica-rich solution filled the surrounding cavity with quartz and completely enclosed the beryl.

Such inclusions are didactically valuable. They make the crystallization sequence readable within the stone. The aquamarine is preserved as a grown gemstone core, with the quartz as a later casing.

Brazilian deposits in Minas Gerais have been a premium source for such beryl-in-quartz specimens for centuries. Recovery often occurs from pegmatite veins several meters deep.
