Dark blue, partly clear aquamarine crystals with black tourmaline and smoky quartz from Brazil

A specimen with dark blue aquamarine crystals from Brazil, accompanied by black tourmaline (schorl) and smoky quartz. The more intense blue of Brazilian aquamarines clearly distinguishes them from the pale Pakistani variety.

Brazilian aquamarines from Minas Gerais typically show a deeper, more saturated blue. The coloring comes from a higher iron concentration in the crystallizing cavity, combined with long radiation exposure. Both factors act on the hexagonal beryl lattice and produce the characteristic dark aquamarine blue.

Black tourmaline (schorl) and smoky quartz grew during parallel phases of pegmatitic cavity infilling. The black schorl needles and the smoky quartz-colored columns complement the main aquamarine component to form a three-mineral specimen with clear contrast.

Brazil provides both aquamarine and the associated minerals from the pegmatite deposits of Minas Gerais. This region has been established as a premium source for gemstones for centuries.
