Great Chevron Amethyst Sphere with Clear Quartz and Agate Phantoms

Chevron amethyst is a rare growth formation in which layers of amethyst and rock crystal form zigzag phantoms across the entire sphere. Each change in layer documents a phase in the hydrothermal mineralization process.

The material primarily comes from the South African deposits of Brandberg and Boekenhouthoek. In this sphere, fine agate bandings are also evident at the transition to the crust, indicating chalcedony phases before the amethyst growth.

A sphere is the most challenging cut for chevron material because the phantom pattern becomes visible three-dimensionally on a curved surface.

The coloring of the amethyst layers varies from deep violet to lighter pink-violet, indicating zonal iron trace elements during the growth phases.
