A very large petrified deciduous tree wood slice from Java, Indonesia, palaeobotanically identified as Magnolia. The cross-section shows the typical angiosperm anatomy of a tropical Tertiary tree.

Magnolia fossils from Javanese deposits document Tertiary tropical forests that were covered by volcanic ash approximately 5 to 15 million years ago. Silicate-rich groundwater replaced the organic matter molecularly with quartz and agate over millennia. The angiosperm structure is preserved one-to-one.
