Indonesian petrified hardwoods originate from Tertiary tropical forests on the island of Java, which were buried by volcanic ash approximately 5 to 15 million years ago. Over millennia, silica-rich groundwater molecularly replaced the organic matter with quartz and agate.

Unlike the Triassic conifers from Arizona, Indonesian hardwoods exhibit the anatomical structure of tropical angiosperms. Prominent vascular bundles, differentiated wood tissue, and vibrant mineralization colors.
