A petrified hardwood disc from Java, Indonesia, a prehistoric magnolia relative. 81 cm trunk diameter, a museum-quality collector's size.
Petrified wood from Java formed in Tertiary swamp sediments, approximately 5-25 million years old. The trunks of tropical deciduous trees were preserved without oxygen contact and transformed into quartz or chalcedony through permineralization.
The cross-section reveals the fibrous structure typical of hardwood: less pronounced growth rings than in conifers, but wide vessels and fine fiber zones. A didactic contrast to Triassic araucaria.
Indonesian deposits are considered a premium source for petrified tropical wood. The warm color bands are caused by iron oxides during mineralization, a different coloring characteristic than North American material.
A paleontological collector's item with a tropical Tertiary narrative and collector's size.
Robust. Dry clean, polished surface with soft cloth.
