Petrified conifer wood disc from Madagascar, Araucaria

A petrified wood slice from Madagascar. The material comes from an Araucaria, a conifer from the Triassic period about 220 million years ago.

The slice was cut with a diamond saw blade, ground on one side, and polished. The other side remained in its original stone surface and shows the high scratch resistance of the silicified material.

Petrified wood forms when organic wood in mineral-rich water is replaced molecule by molecule by SiO₂. The cell structure is completely preserved and remains legible even after millions of years.

Noticeable are the light, grayish base color and the encircling bark structure. All colors are natural. Nothing has been dyed or treated.
