Labradorite is a calcium-sodium plagioclase feldspar. The characteristic iridescence, called labradorescence, is caused by light refraction on microscopically thin lamellar layers of varying plagioclase composition.

The Madagascan deposits in the Maniry region supply the highest quality labradorite material worldwide. The polishing process follows the iridescence geometry of the raw material.
