Rock crystal is the pure quartz variety (SiO₂) without color-giving trace elements. The clarity of the raw material is the main quality criterion; only a small fraction of Madagascan rock crystals achieves cutting quality in this block size.

Crystal skulls follow the standardized skull anatomy from the esoteric and collector's market. The art historical roots lie in Mesoamerican traditions; today, skull carvings are a collector's category of their own.
