Rock crystal sphere with included black tourmaline crystals (schorl) from Madagascar

A polished rock crystal sphere from Madagascar, with numerous enclosed black schorl tourmaline crystals. The needle-shaped tourmaline inclusions run through the transparent, clear quartz volume like an internal sculpture.

Rock crystal (SiO₂) and schorl (sodium-bearing black tourmaline) grew together in pegmatitic cavities. During the crystallization of the quartz, the schorl needles grew in the surrounding material and were simultaneously enclosed by the expanding quartz lattice, a simultaneous mineral genesis.

The 12 cm sphere is cut from a quartz block with intergrown tourmaline needles in such a way that the internal structures are optimally showcased. The cut follows the natural clarity distribution in the material.

Madagascar supplies quartz with schorl inclusions from the pegmatite deposits of the Vakinankaratra region. Such tourmaline quartz spheres are classified in the collector's trade as premium multi-component quartz.
