Rock crystal is the purest variety of quartz (SiO₂). The shimmering inclusions can have various origins: micro-cavities with fluid inclusions, growth discontinuities, or fine accompanying mineral particles.

As the sphere is rotated, the reflective points shift, a dynamic phenomenon classified in the collector's trade as internal scintillation. Larger inclusion structures enable this optical effect.
