Rock crystal is the purest variety of quartz (SiO₂), crystallizing trigonally in classic six-sided columns. The rhombohedral pyramid faces are diagnostic for quartz and clearly distinguish it from hexagonal minerals such as apatite or beryl.

Such large single points grow undisturbed in tectonically calm fissure spaces over millions of years. The clarity is a marker for homogeneous solution chemistry without trace element fluctuations during the entire growth phase.
