Rock crystal is the purest variety of quartz. It crystallizes trigonally in classic six-sided columns with pyramidal terminations. The three main points show the characteristic rhombohedral end faces that distinguish quartz from other hexagonal minerals.

Multiple generations arise from a pause in the solution chemistry. After the initial growth spurt, the cavity was briefly inactive and then refilled. The main columns mark the first generation, with the small crystals in between representing the later infilling. A geological narrative embedded in the stone.

Brazilian rock crystal deposits in Minas Gerais are among the world's most productive for clear, collector-quality specimens. Extraction occurs from pegmatite veins and tectonic fracture spaces. Intact clusters with preserved multi-generational character are particularly prized.
