Light blue water-clear aquamarine crystals with muscovite and albite from the Himalayas

A specimen with light blue, water-clear aquamarine crystals from Afghanistan, embedded between muscovite mica and albite. The clarity of the beryl columns is a marker for premium quality Afghan pegmatite deposits.

Aquamarine is the light blue beryl variety, colored by trace amounts of divalent iron. Water-clear columns form under very calm deposit conditions with uniform solution chemistry over long crystallization periods.

Afghan pegmatites, especially in Nuristan province, are considered a premium source for clear beryl material. The deposits share a geological kinship with the Pakistani Karakoram pegmatites and yield comparable high-purity material.

The associated minerals muscovite and albite document the typical pegmatitic three-mineral constellation: plagioclase phase first, parallel beryl and mica in the remaining cavities.
