A large amethyst heart from Uruguay. The deep, uniformly saturated violet coloration typical of the region covers the entire display side.

Uruguayan amethyst is considered by collectors to be the premium material worldwide. The coloration is significantly deeper and more uniform than comparable Brazilian pieces. The Uruguayan deposits in Artigas have a different geological genesis.

Amethyst belongs to the quartz family and crystallizes in the volcanic gas cavities of lava flows. The violet coloration is caused by tiny traces of iron in the crystal lattice, which are stimulated into color centers under natural radiation.

The heart shape is created by selective cutting from a larger geode. At this size, it requires careful pre-selection to find a piece whose crystal distribution evenly fills the heart silhouette.

What makes this piece special is the uniform depth of color right into the inner tips. No lighter base zones, an indication of optimal radiation conditions throughout the entire geode.
