The deep purple color is the typical Uruguayan amethyst classification. The Arapey basalt formation produces the material with the most intensely dark purple hue worldwide.

Uruguayan amethyst crystallizes in volcanic geodes of this formation. The deposits in Artigas and Salto have been the globally documented premium provenance for the darkest amethyst colors for decades.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The color results from iron substitutions in the crystal lattice and natural irradiation in the host rock.

The polished cut surface shows the typical Uruguayan internal crystallography. Material of this size and color is manually selected for higher market classification.
