Uruguayan amethyst crystallizes in volcanic geodes of the Arapey Basalt Formation and is considered the darkest, deepest-purple colored amethyst variety in the world. The intense color is created by iron substitutions in the quartz lattice; the deeper the coloring, the higher the iron concentration of the original solution.

The Uruguayan deposits in the departments of Artigas and Salto supply the most prized premium material on the global amethyst market. Premium classification is awarded based on color intensity, crystal clarity, and cavity geometry.

The significant depth of the geode indicates an appropriately large original cavity volume. This allowed the quartz crystals to elongate significantly with clear terminations.
