Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz, its color resulting from iron trace elements and natural radiation exposure. Uruguayan material is among the most intensely colored sources worldwide, more compact and deeper in blue compared to Brazilian amethyst.

The geode pair form is created by controlled splitting of the geode along its axis of symmetry. Both halves mirror the same growth geometry of the original cavity's inner wall.

The deposits in Artigas extend across the basalt flows of the Serra Geral Formation, geologically closely related to the Brazilian occurrences further north. Despite geographical proximity, Uruguayan geodes consistently exhibit more intense coloring, indicating specific solution chemistry in these cavities.
