Golden, very clear twin citrine crystal with rock crystal from Zambia

A clear twin citrine crystal from Zambia, with golden-yellow depth and an intergrown rock crystal element. Two quartz varieties in a single crystallographic constellation.

Citrine and rock crystal are both varieties of quartz and differ only in their trace element configuration: citrine contains traces of iron as a coloring element, while rock crystal is the uncolored, pure form of quartz. The fact that both grow together in one aggregate documents the change in solution chemistry during the pegmatitic phase.

Twin crystals form when two individual crystals grow together according to crystallographic laws. Dauphiné and Brazilian twins are known in quartz; the aggregate visible here shows a specific growth geometry of the deposit.
