Triplets are a rare twinning variant in which three crystals grow together, twinned according to crystallographic laws. The most common quartz twin forms are the Dauphiné twin or the Japanese twin; a triplet, meaning three twinned columns in a symmetrical arrangement, is a gemmological collector's phenomenon.

Zambian citrine deposits around Kalomo are considered a premium source for naturally grown, gemstone-quality citrine. The deep golden-yellow color visible here is characteristic of the deposit and clearly differs from heat-treated amethysts often sold as citrine in the trade.

Triplets form under specific pressure and solution conditions during crystallization. Three crystals find their shared growth space in a cavity and share their crystal axes.
