Emerald is the chromium-bearing beryl variety. The intense green color is caused by traces of chromium or vanadium in the beryllium-aluminum-silicate lattice.

The radial arrangement of the crystals is a special feature. It occurs when emerald grows outwards from a central nucleation point in an open cavity, a rarer growth pattern than the usual parallel arrangement.

The specimen is accompanied by smoky quartz and flaky muscovite mica. The mica association is diagnostic for pegmatitic genesis and underlines the high-quality provenance of this specimen.
