Smoky Quartz Double Terminated Point with Great Tourmaline Inclusions

A smoky quartz double-terminated crystal with two parallel-growing termination axes, both with clearly visible schorl tourmaline needle inclusions inside.

The fine black schorl needles run through the smoky quartz like petrified rays. They were enclosed as older, already grown tourmaline crystals by the later quartz growth, a classic example of contact mineralization.

Smoky quartz belongs to the quartz family. The smoky coloration is caused by natural radiation from the surrounding pegmatite, which converts aluminum trace elements in the crystal lattice into color centers.

The double termination is a rare growth form in which two parallel crystal axes have terminated simultaneously from a common root point.

This combination of smoky quartz host and black schorl inclusions is known as tourmalinated quartz and is particularly sought after by collectors.
