Breathtaking Malachite Freeform in the Best Quality

A polished malachite freeform on a hand-carved wooden base, featuring the concentric eye-banding pattern typical of the species.

Malachite is a secondary copper carbonate. It forms in the upper weathering zones of copper-bearing ore deposits when copper-containing solutions react with carbonic acid-rich groundwater.

The annular eye structures arise from grape-like, botryoidal aggregates that grow inwards in layers within cavities. When cut, these shells become visible as concentric bands.

Today's main deposits are located in the Congo (Katanga Province) and Zambia. Pieces of this size and with such clearly defined eye patterns practically exclusively originate from these two sources.

The irregular, flowing outer shape has been left as a freeform; only the visible surface has been polished. The dark wooden base follows classic Chinese collector tradition.
