Malachite Rough Stone

A rough malachite stone from the Congo. The piece shows a special 'kidney' growth geometry, characteristic rounded aggregate forms without linear banding.

Kidney-shaped (botryoidal) malachite growth geometries arise from particularly rapid mineralization in stagnant solutions. Instead of the usual linear banding, such constellations produce spherical, grape-like aggregates.

The botryoidal variant is a distinct form classification in the collector's market. It is also known as the 'mamillon' form and is particularly prized in gemology.

Congolese malachite deposits produce both the classic banded variant and the botryoidal form. The specific microclimate of the deposit determines which variant dominates.
