A Septarian heart from USA, Utah, with star-shaped jagged cavities filled with yellow calcite. Both sides are cut and polished.
Septarians are sedimentary concretions that form in marly layers. As they dry out, the clay core cracks radially, and the resulting fissures are later filled with calcite or aragonite. The result is the characteristic "dragon stone" structure.
The calcite fillings in this Septarian are unusually clear and brightly yellow. The piece was cut from a round Septarian nodule into a heart shape, without any dyeing. The calcite crystals inside remain natural.
