Tektite from Thailand

A tektite from Thailand, a natural glass with a deep black luster and the characteristically fractured surface of the Indochinite species.

Tektites are formed when a large meteorite impacts the Earth. Parts of the molten terrestrial rock are hurled back through the atmosphere as glowing droplets. During their flight, these droplets solidify into glass and, seconds later, hit the ground again as small, sometimes droplet-shaped pieces.

The Southeast Asian tektite fields date back to an impact around 790,000 years ago. The crater has not yet been clearly identified. The pieces known as Indochinites are distributed across a strewn field from Thailand to Australia.

Unlike a classic meteorite, tektite does not consist of extraterrestrial material, but of terrestrial rock. It was transformed into glass by the melt energy of a cosmic impact. A trace that tells the story of both the event and the Earth.
