Malachite Rough Stone

A rough malachite stone from the Congo. The banding structure of this piece shows an unusually dense concentric arrangement, with many narrow rings per unit length.

Dense banding structures document high mineralization cycle frequencies during the deposit's history. Faster geochemical changes produce narrower banding lines, while slower changes produce wider rings.

The Congolese Katanga Province has experienced several distinct mineralization episodes throughout Earth's history: copper mineralization occurred in specific sedimentary layers during the Proterozoic era (approx. 800-600 million years ago). The oxidation phase to malachite has continued from the late Mesozoic to the present day.
