Phantom crystals form when quartz growth briefly interrupts. A thin layer of minerals is deposited – in this case, iron oxide for the golden color and traces of aluminum for the smoky quartz components. Growth then resumes, and the layer remains visible as a geometric phantom.

Zambian citrine belongs to the rare category of natural, unheated material. Its golden-yellow color results from iron substitutions directly from the deposit, without heat treatment.
