Phantoms are internal growth stages. During one phase of crystallization, the material developed a smoky quartz coloration, followed by a return to the lighter citrine phase. The two large phantom layers document two distinct solution changes during its growth history.

Zambian deposits around Kalomo are considered a premium source for naturally grown gemstone-quality citrine. The multi-generational phantom structures are unusually clear here because the material crystallized slowly and without tectonic disturbances.

When light passes through the sphere, the phantoms appear as shifting shadows, depending on the light source and viewing angle. A gemmologically valuable detail that is only visible in clear material.
