Citrine and smoky quartz are both varieties of quartz and differ only in their trace element configuration. Phantoms arise when the solution chemistry oscillates during crystallization: intermittent aluminum-containing phases create the smoky quartz-colored layers as internal growth lines within the citrine-colored main mass.

Rainbow reflections (iris quartz) are caused by light refraction at fine microcavities and growth discontinuities within the crystal. Larger inclusions create larger color areas, a marker for undisturbed growth with internal complexity.

Zambian citrine deposits from the Kalomo District yield naturally grown, gem-quality citrine, an important distinction from heat-treated amethysts. A 15 cm sphere of this material is a premium collector's size.
