Ammonites and belemnites are both Late Cretaceous cephalopod groups that lived in the tropical seas of the Tethys Ocean at that time. The Moroccan sediments of the High Atlas were part of this sea during the Cretaceous period and preserved their fossils in limestone layers.

Belemnites show their characteristic cigar-shaped hard parts (rostra), while ammonites show their spiral shell cross-sections. Finding both together on one slab is a spatially conserved constellation: a single sediment horizon fixed both groups simultaneously.

Such mass slabs are paleontologically valuable: they show the marine diversity of the Late Cretaceous as a coherent community. Moroccan limestone deposits regularly yield such slabs of collector quality.
