Delicate amethyst-rock crystal flowers on volcanic basalt rock

A specimen with delicate amethyst rock crystal “flowers” from Iraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, grown on a dark basalt matrix. A rare growth variation in which the quartz crystals aggregate radially to form flower-like structures.

Amethyst rock crystal “flowers” are micro-aggregates with two growth phases: an inner rock crystal core, then a later outer amethyst layer. The radial-bladed geometry arises from central growth nuclei that send out crystals in all directions.

Iraí, in northern Rio Grande do Sul, yields such flower-like aggregates of collector quality. The phenomenon is due to specific solution and pressure conditions during crystallization in the volcanic cavities of the Serra Geral Formation.

The basalt matrix as a host is diagnostic for the deposit typology: volcanically formed cavities in the lava flows, where mineralization proceeded slowly over millions of years.
