Delicate amethyst flowers from Irai in Brazil, amethyst flowers

A specimen with delicate amethyst flowers from Iraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The English collector's term "amethyst flowers" has become established for this rare radial-fibrous growth habit.

Amethyst flowers are micro-aggregates. Crystallization occurs radially outwards from a central growth nucleus. Instead of a dense carpet of points, individual flower-like structures emerge, composed of thin radial quartz columns that are perfectly oriented on a micrometer scale.

The deposit in Iraí, in the far north of Rio Grande do Sul, is one of the few places where these radial aggregates form in collector quality. This phenomenon is attributed to specific solution and pressure conditions during crystallization in the volcanic geodes of the Serra Geral Formation.

Unlike classic amethyst geodes, this growth variety is a geological marker for particular cavity conditions. They do not occur in standard deposits.
