Star rose quartz is a rare variety in which microscopically fine rutile needles grow in three directions parallel to the main crystal axis. When illuminated directly, light reflects off these needles, creating a six-rayed star (asterism) that moves with the light source.

The Madagascan deposits in the Antsirabe region provide the world's best star rose quartz material. Only a small fraction of the raw material exhibits the asterism effect; gemologically, star rose quartz is a premium classification in the rose quartz market.

The spherical shape maximizes the visibility of the star: when the sphere or the light source is rotated, the star moves across the surface and documents the main crystallographic axis.
